yetの用法を明確に理解していないです。下記の文章でニュアンスが何となくしか分かりませんでした。

引用:The Economist – Will the Wuhan virus become a pandemic

The way to do this is by isolating cases as soon as they crop up and tracing and quarantining people that victims have been in contact with—indeed, if the disease burns out in China, that might yet stop the pandemic altogether.

  • coordinate : 等位の
    • coordinate conjunction
      無関係な2つのwrodまたはwords of  groupを接続する
  • subordinate : 従属の
  • correlative conjunction: 相関接続詞
  • concessive clause: 適切な訳不明
    • 主文お主張に反してある事実の側面を認めたり、仮定を認める事
  • copula: 補語と接続する時のbe動詞

メモ

  • yetは等位接続詞で文章から文章、パラグラフからパラグラフへの遷移に使われる事も多い。
  • yetとstillはtime/degreeを表す時は副詞

例: An Advanced English Grammar

We have not started yet. [Time]

It is still raining. [Time]

This hatchet is dull, but that is duller still. [Degree]

I miss him, yet I am glad he went. [Conjunction]

I like dogs; still I don’t care to own one. [Conjunction]

  • although … yet(still)

Though the roads were very bad, yet he managed to reach Florida before midnight.

結局、yetで対比を表しているにすぎないと思う。

Concessive Caluse

従属接続詞によって導かれる節で主節の主張に反して一部の事実や仮定を認める節。though, although, even ifによって導かれる事が多い。

例: An Advanced English Grammar

Although I don’t like his manners, I respect his character.

We won the game, though we expected to lose.

Even if you fail, you will have gained experience.

concessive clauseを伴う主節はyet, still, neverthelessで強調される事がある。

例: An Advanced English Grammar

Although the task was heavy, yet his courage never failed.

Though his reputation was great at home, yet it was greater abroad.

concessive caluseの主語とbe動詞は省略されることがある。

例: An Advanced English Grammar

Though [he was] tired, he wasn’t disheartened.

This punishment, though perhaps [it is] necessary, seems rather severe.

以下、cambridgeを見ながら纏め。

副詞の用法

過去から現在まで続いている時間について述べる。通常は否定的な発言で使われるか完了形の疑問文で使われる。この用法のyetの位置は通常文末。

もう完了済みの動作についてはyetは使えない点に注意。

Not: She’s booked the flights yet.

yetが否定文で使われる時の用法

ニュアンス的には将来まだやっていない物事が将来起こるだろうという意味合いがある。

Kevin hasn’t registered for class yet.

I haven’t finished my breakfast yet.

Jason hasn’t phoned yet. (I am expecting him to phone.)

I haven’t seen ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ yet. (I am expecting to see this film.)

yetが疑問文で使われる時の用法

肯定的な疑問文で使われる時は話者はその聞いている物事が起こる事を想定して聞いている。

Has she emailed you yet?

Is he home yet? (I expect that he will be home at some point.)

Has your passport arrived yet? (I expect that your passport will arrive in the post.)

否定疑問文の場合はより強く起こるだろう事を聞いている。

Hasn’t Richard arrived yet? (I strongly expect that he should have arrived.)

Haven’t you done your driving test yet? (I feel you should have done your driving test by now.)

yetが肯定文で使われる時の用法

聞き手がそうは思っていないような状況でも話者はそれが真だと思っている時に言う。

There’s plenty of time yet. (even though you don’t think so)

We’ve got a lot more work to do yet. (even though you think we have finished)

yetの最上級で使われる時の用法

これまでで一番のニュアンスが出る。

His latest film is his best yet. (The film is the best one he has made up to now.)

Two hours and 15 minutes – that’s Jones’s fastest marathon yet!

could be true/could be happenの用法

物事が将来起こるかもしれない事を言う時に使う。

This victory could yet put the team into the finals.

Lawrence’s body was never found, and he may yet be alive.

接続詞の用法

but/neverthelessの意味で対比を表すのに使われる。andの直後に使われる事が多い。

It felt strange and yet so wonderful to ski in the summer!

強調の用法

evenの意味で使われる。more, another, againの前で使われる。

The cook arrived with yet another plate of cake.

The printer’s broken down yet again! (It has broken down many times before.)

As yetの用法

「今まで」の意味だが将来絶対状況が変わるだろう的なニュアンスがある。否定的な話の前後関係でしか使われない。

The film shows you the most typical places, as yet untouched by tourism, and how to get there.

今は観光で注目されていないが将来は観光客で溢れかえるだろう的なニュアンスが含まれる。

have yet to/as yet toの用法

フォーマルな場面で使われ必要なイベント(物事)、いつか必ず必要なイベントだが話している時点ではまだ起きていないイベントについて言及する。

The price of the tickets for the concert has yet to be decided. (The price will be decided.)

The President and her husband are yet to arrive. (The President and her husband will arrive.)
