下記の思考で while を選んでしまった。

  • 2 文を接続しているので接続詞が入る
  • during だと prop + noun で接続詞じゃないので却下

完全に接続詞の用法を忘れています。

while は副詞節を導く従属接続詞なので S + V になっていない時点で真っ先に候補から外れます。

during が正解だけども during は prop です。, で接続できるものなのでしょうか？

一旦、during の意味を整理地ましょう。

意味

prop の用法しか無いです。意味は何かイベントの間の全期間や単にある一定の期間を表します。

eg. You are not allowed to use your mobile phone during class. (the whole of the class)
eg. I have to have my window open during the night. (the whole of the night)

in を使って書き換えられる場合もあります。

eg. His grandfather fought in the army during the First World War. (or … in the First World War.)
eg. When I was a kid, our cousins often came to stay with us during the summer. (or … in the summer.)

いつだったか分からない期間を表す時は in ではなく during を使うのが一般的です。

eg. What was that noise I heard during the night, I wonder? or … in the night. (I heard a noise at an unspecified point in the night.)
eg. One day, during the Second World War, her father just disappeared. (He disappeared at an unspecified point.)

時間を数字で表す場合は during は使えず for を使用します。

eg. They lived in Edinburgh for four years.
Not: They lived in Edinburgh during four years.

first/last + length は例外です。

eg. During the first three years of the war, 50,000 civilians were killed. (during refers to when this happened.)
eg. I haven’t done any exercise during the last week. (during refers to when I didn’t do exercise.)

倒置して , で接続した様に見える場合

これ倒置とは言わないと思います。また、今気づきましたが 2 文章を接続していないですよね…。文とは節になっているものなので。

prop + noun で形容詞句、副詞句の意味になります。特に副詞句になった場合は文中のどこにでも置けるわけです。
