TOEIC 800 からやり直す文法まとめ。分詞構文は過去10年で4回位覚え直しています。日常で使わないので細かい事は忘れちゃいます。

基本

1語の分詞 + 名詞

この時は名詞を前から修飾する。
eg. A baby ruined the movie. ⇒ A crying baby ruined the movie.
eg. I took the package to the post office. ⇒ I took the wrapped package to the post office.

Two otherが主語かと思ってしまいました…。細かく解説すると Two が名詞の副詞的用法で何でも修飾できる。other は限定詞。needed が facilities を修飾している。

名詞 + 分詞句（2語以上）

名詞を後ろから修飾
eg. The goods are exported. ⇒ The goods made in this factory are exported.

used insteadがThe facilityを修飾。

副詞句的に使われる用法

Bob was waiting for Mary.
Bob was waiting for Mary reading a book.

NOTE: 日本だと分詞句が副詞的に使われるのを分詞構文と言うらしい。

分詞構文では分詞の意味上の主語は原則主文の主語と同じになる。そうならない場合は独立分詞構文にし意味上の主語を明示しないといけない。

  • whiz deletionによりwho isが省略されているとは考え難い。それならgraderの直後に割り込むはず？
  • そもそも文法の原則に反した構文？一応、明らかに主語はpoor fourth-graderだというのが分かる。

分詞構文の様々な形

分詞句が文末に置かれる場合がある。この時は , で区切る
eg. He sat on the bench, playing the guitar.

分詞句が主語の直後に置かれる場合がある。この時は , , で囲む
eg. Mary, shocked at the news, couldn’t speak a word.

倒置する場合がある。この時は , で区切る。
eg. Playing the guitar, he sat on the beach.
eg. 引用：The Economist Britain after Brexit

Pulled apart by the tensions within the union, its nations need to find a new accommodation.

MEMO: 接続詞で始まる節も倒置する時がある。この場合も , を忘れずに付ける。
eg. Since you have a fever, you should stay home. ⇒ You should stay home since you have a fever.
因みに since は相手が既に知っている原因・理由を述べる時に用いて、since が導く節は主節の前に置かれるのが普通。

being の省略

文頭に分詞構文が来る場合は being が省略される事があります。

Confident that he was ____ more qualified than other candidates, my manager hired him as the new lead programmer.

An accomplished skater ____, Mr. Loewenstein also coaches the world-champion figure skater.
