before の用法を纏めます。before は prep, adv, conjunction の用法があります。

before は時間的に前である事を表現しますがテキストで前に言った事を示す場合は above を使用します。よく海外と JIRA 上でやり取りをしていると before でもなく below でもなく above で以前に述べた事を指している理由がこれですね。

prep であるイベントより前を表す用法

before + noun phrases(timed event) でよく見かける用法です。

I like to go for a run before breakfast.

You can check in online but you have to do it at least four hours before your flight.

noun phrases は場所も取れますが例えば旅行で訪れる場所等の様に一連のイベントで訪れる場所である時のみ使用可能です。

Get off the bus just before Euston Station.

Just before the end of the poem, there is a line where the poet expresses his deepest fears.

 

before, by, till, until の違い

ある時点で何かをしなければならないという文脈で before を使用できますが by, till, until とのニュアンスの違いに注意しましょう。

I need to have the letter before Friday. (Friday is too late. I need it in advance of Friday.)

before を使用した場合は before が示す時では手遅れという意味合いがあります。

その時間までを期限としたい場合は by を使用します。

Can we finish this meeting by 5 pm. I have to get to the station by 5.30 pm. (5 pm is the latest that I want the meeting to finish and 5.30 pm is the latest that I can arrive at the station.)

ある時点より前で時間の幅がある場合は till, until を使用します。

17日までは不在の意味、17日に戻るかもしれないけど。
